Mid-century modern wall mural in a 1954 Tempe, Arizona home.  A sparse tree (a Joshua tree?) in the desert.

What a beautifully kept room. It isn’t just the mural that is “retro-mid-century” in that room.

That doesn’t look like an authentic 50’s wallpaper mural to me. It may have been done in the 50’s, by hand to cover that long wall. They get an A for effort.

Very, very nice. Let’s just hope the next owner doesn’t “improve” it with ideas from HGTV or DIY Network.

Some people say an old-fashioned decorated room is ugly. Those same people can call another old-fashioned decorated room, “retro,” and be positive about it. This room is too eclectic for me. The striped wall corner does not blend at all with the mural half of the room. Also the mural reminds me of the vulture scene in the Disney cartoon movie Jungle Book.

Very nice in context of MCM…….

Once the new owners move in, it’s gonna be a bland plain white/grey room, which is a shame.

    I love the unpainted paneling.

    LOVE the tv/hi-fidelity cabinet.

    But I think that’s Mt. Doom – it’s a middle-earth scene!

    Mid-century perhaps, but not modern.

That’s the problem with opinions. I think this is so ugly we need a new word for ugly.

I like retro feel of this room. The only things I don’t like are the brass light fixtures. They provide very poor lighting. Our 90s home was full of them when we bought it but we changed every single one because they are not functional and do not provide any light. They also look too much like office lights and I find them unattractive.

What actually looked good in the ’50s? Well, nothing did. Hopefully by now the room pictured has been given a thorough remodel. Out with the ugly retro old and in with the new.
