Pretty In Pink Ovens

April 24th, 2017 · 7 Comments

Pink was a popular color in kitchens in the 1950s and early 1960s. Let’s take a look at four pink ovens that are still in use today after five decades.

Milk Delivery

February 23rd, 2017 · 4 Comments

From a 1936 Phoenix home: the original dairy delivery box & ordering dial. The milkman would deliver your milk or dairy in this tiny box at the side of your house and would see your request for the next order. There are a few homes in Phoenix that still have this. Very rare since Phoenix is a new town (1950s+).

This home also has a phone niche in the hallway. Under the phone is a tiny drawer (or open slot in some homes) where you put the phone book.

Palm Springs Time Capsule

February 28th, 2016 · 16 Comments

Today we are celebrating the 1970s in a Palm Springs, California home.  [I marked the category “Not Ugly” because the house is in such pristine condition.]  This is a listing in Palm Springs from one of my college fraternity brothers.  Please enjoy the 1970s flashback.  Groovy!

Florida Grandma Becomes Internet Darling

September 20th, 2015 · 2 Comments

Our reader Tyson found these photos of a Davenport, Florida home seller.  Actual credit goes to the granddaughter who originally posted these to her twitter account (@asapmakky).  From there, her grandma became a big hit.  Supposedly the seller’s daughter encouraged her to pose.

We’re not a fan of people showing up in real estate photos.  In this case, the house got a lot of attention and free publicity because of the cute seller.

Distressed Brick Back Splash

September 15th, 2015 · 1 Comment

We’ve seen a lot of unusual choices for kitchen back splashes here.  From gaudy tile to trendy glass.  Today we’re actually happy with a new style of back splash: distressed brick.  It’s not tumbled travertine, but it looks like it.  Not quite Tuscan either.  But the overall look is pleasant, high-end, soft, clean, and modern.

It’s no wonder this home received multiple offers.  [Sorry, no ‘before’ photos were available.]

Looks like an expensive kitchen remodel.  The random brick pattern is a clever idea.  The house sold for only $140,000.

Walk-In Tub

August 19th, 2015 · 11 Comments

We’re not making fun of this bathroom.  We know you are curious what those walk-in bathtubs look like.  Here’s one from Apache Junction, Arizona.  You walk in thru the small door on the side, then assumedly take off your clothes and sit down on the bench there, then you fill up the tub.  The weight of the water keeps the door closed during your bath.  It’s not really a bathtub; more like a sitting bath.  It uses a lot of water.  After bathing, you drain the tub and have to wait and wait and wait.  Can’t open the door until it’s empty.  Hopefully you don’t shiver to death while waiting.  Don’t forget your towel!  If you use the hand-held shower head to wash your hair, you’ll likely get water splashed outside the tub.

This is a 5,576 square foot home on 1.13 acres that is located in SkyRanch in Carefree.  It sold recently for $1.25 million.  In addition to the huge garage you just saw, there is a 54′ x 51′ hangar.  Yes, you can park a plane in your hangar.

SkyRanch is a fly-in community.  There is a runway right there behind the houses.  It’s approved for planes under 12,500 pounds.  The house in the middle of the photo with the white roof is the home that just sold.
