Real estate is cyclical. Conditions of homes are cyclical. When the housing market tanked, nearly 90% of homes for sale were vacant. We had a hard time finding photos with furniture & ugly decorations. Then homes became neglected (weeds) and/or damaged (kitchens removed; houses trashed). Then the market started to recover and we noticed a lot of nice looking, clean homes. Finding ugly house photos was hard. Nowadays, we’re seeing a return of the truly neglected (probably because the inventory is so low and because prices have gone up that investors are buying the leftovers) and also an increase in clutter & hoarding.
So here is another example of neglect and vandalism. The home owner did not pay attention to the roof.

Head in the sand? Didn’t see it?

Bathroom vanity removed.

Copper theft.

Vandalized.

Broken window and more.

Kitchen nightmare.

Electric issues.

Ugly flooring.

Lots of renovation needed.

Urban scenery is the focus of Dutch photographer Niki Feijen’s work. Her collection of photos of abandoned homes, farms, and buildings in The Netherlands is fascinating.

Look what time has done.

The roof collapsed in this home.

A snapshot in time.

Many homes were simply abandoned with furniture and belongings still in place.

Time removed most of the wallpaper.

Mold & mildew on the ceiling.

Wild wallpaper.

Shingles missing from an Apache Junction, Arizona home’s roof.

It wasn’t like the shingles were going to magically reappear some day.

So the roof leaked and this is what happened next.

Ignoring the problem will make things worse.

Private property. No trespassing. Welcome not to our home.

We updated the kitchen.

Great view of the back yard from the kitchen sink.

Plenty of storage space for food.

The water running down the vent and hall ceiling helps keep the house cool in the summer.

Fresh paint in the bathroom.

Oh, yes, it’s clean.

Spacious rooms.

The bedroom can easily accommodate a large dresser.

We’ve really enjoyed using this house.

We have a private covered patio.

Just like the fence, we’re hoping you’re leaning toward buying our home.

Sales in this neighborhood are as flat as that tire.

They paid $105,500 for the house in 2004 and probably thought there was no maintenance required. Ever. Holes in the ceiling? Now what?

The house sold in this condition as a short sale for $18,000.

Might have sold for more if they had monitored and fixed the roof.

No one noticed problems in several rooms??!!

Head in the sand? Ignore it and it will go away?

A repair was started outside. The new buyer gets to finish it.

The bathroom has poor lighting.

The kitchen was updated at one point.

Not sure why they have a window shade in the kitchen. Is that a junction box dangling on the wall?

Too bad the house fell into disrepair.

[For retro appliance lovers, we have a treat for you at the end of this post.]
The sellers are claiming the water stains are actually art work.

The leak was in the laundry room.

What’s this in one of the bedrooms??

Looks like they put vinyl floor tiles on the bedroom walls!

They are calling this a great room.

You decide if it’s that great.

It has potential.

Here’s the gourmet kitchen.

It has the original pull-out oven and range! The house was built in the mid 1940s.

You pull out the range.

When finished cooking, you push the range back in. I hope the buyers keep the range or sell it to a collector.

The exterior of the house could use some help too.

Why is there insulation on the kitchen floor?

And in the bathroom too?

Oh, that’s why. The ceiling fell down.

Same problem in another house.

Fallen insulation in the bathroom too.

There’s the hole in the ceiling. The photo caption states there was water damage.

Ugly wall in Houston, Texas.

Damaged wall in Taneytown, Maryland. They had a plumbing and mold problem here. And stupid knotted curtains.

These Marianna, Florida sellers put floor vinyl on their bathroom walls.

Warped wood paneling due to water leaks in the laundry room. Dalton, Georgia.

Warped walls in an Avondale, Arizona home.

What happened to this Mesa, Arizona home’s wall?

Please, someone buy this house and return it to its original glory. The current owners haven’t maintained it very well.
They built an enclosed porch out front. Why bother with a door? Thieves can just crawl through the open windows. Check out the door. It’s very short.

Here’s what the front porch looks like.

First impressions at the front door?

Let’s go inside now. Check out the bathroom. Lots of dust on that ceiling fan!

The kitchen looks surprisingly clean.

Bedroom crammed full. If any of the kids complain, dad will use the paddle hanging on the left wall.

The air freshener gives a false sense of well-being in this bedroom. They’ve blocked the window with a cabinet. That’s the head of a small boy in the bottom right corner.

Let’s go outside and get some fresh air. Oh, bad idea.

Let’s go up on the roof next.

“What do you mean we have to maintain the roof?”

“How was I supposed to know? I couldn’t see it.”

“So whadya want me to do about it?”

“I’m just going to sell the house as-is.”

“Is the bad roof why that happened?”

“It happened over here.”

“And there too.” As Bill Engvall says, “Here’s your sign.”
