Gazebo Built For Only One

March 3rd, 2013 · No Comments

They’re proud of their do-it-yourself gazebo in Mankato, Minnesota.  Unfortunately, by using only one plywood sheet and a few cinder blocks, only one person can enjoy it at a time.  Otherwise, the floor will collapse.  And watch your step entering and leaving.

Remodel Almost Complete

November 3rd, 2012 · 5 Comments

The description for this house states, “Remodel almost complete.”  Oh, okay.

Then it states, “Owner has started the remodel.”  But it’s almost completed, right?

It also states, “Master bedroom remodel started but not completed.”  That makes sense.

And “owner will leave materials for buyer.”  Thank you.  We were worried.  It also states, “Anticipated cost to complete remodel is $30,000.”  Oops!  Hmmm.  And also, “Exterior stucco will need replaced.”  Oh.  Did he get a building permit for the room addition?

The owner lived in the house during the “remodeling.”  Time for new pillows!

Best of Worst What Were They Thinking - Round 1 - Division B

Best of Worst What Were They Thinking - Round 1 - Division B

Six candidates for your vote as Worst “What Were They Thinking” Real Estate Photos. These are actual photos used to promote the sale of the home. We look at them and wonder “Why?” and “Really?” and “What were you thinking?”
You are allowed one vote per day. The top 2 will move on to Round 2 on Saturday.

DUCT DUCT GOOSE:  Why did they put air conditioning ducts on top of the roof?  It gets a little hot in the summer in Phoenix.  We see this a lot, actually.  Owners add a room and then add A/C to it.  Not very efficient.

AMATEUR PAINTER:  What is that supposed to be?  A mushroom cap?  A halo?  An umbrella?  It’s not even even.

SECURITY DOOR:  Why is there a close-up photo of a door?  To show that you can chain it for security?

UGLY SHADES:  What are these things?  Sunscreens?  Dried fish?  Smoked meat?  Why are they there?

SATELLITE DISH:  What is an outdated piece of technology still doing in someone’s back yard?  Is it spy equipment to listen in on the neighbors?  The 70s called; they want their satellite dish back.  This is an example of functional obsolescence.

SOMETHING:  What is that thing?  Entertainment center?  Media niche?  Bookshelf?  Display stand?  Cat tower?  Can we ask the sellers to take it with them?

Best of Worst Room Additions

February 8th, 2011 · 1 Comment

The UglyHousePhotos awards for Worst Room Additions go to:

7th Place - No insulation under the roof.  No ventilation except for the wall A/C unit.  The roof slopes back to the house which isn’t good during rains.

080228g.jpg

6th Place - It scored points for being unfinished, but at least they have new flashing at the roof edge and some type of wall insulation.

080321j.jpg

5th Place - Warped roof edge.  Bars on the window.  Scary electric panel about to fall over.

4th Place - His and hers bathrooms?

3rd Place -  Poor workmanship.  Bad ventilation ductwork on top of the roof.  Cheap windows.

2nd Place -  Would you use this “bathroom”?

Must Be a Real Treat To Live Here

Here’s a fixer-upper for you to enjoy.  Imagine living there.  Someone did.

Heavy Traffic Pattern

November 19th, 2010 · 5 Comments

So much for vinyl flooring that can take the wear and tear of daily living!  Good grief.  Did the owners wear cleats in the house or sandpaper on their soles?

After Not Any Better Than Before

August 21st, 2010 · 27 Comments

Our readers enjoy Before & After house photos.  Usually the After photos look better than the Before photos.  Maybe not so much in this example.

Here we see the After shower of a remodeled Phoenix home.  A modern design was used to create this curvy Flintstone shower.  Let’s look at the practicality of it.  First, the shower seat will receive 40% of the water and looks like it will hold soapy water without draining.  Phoenix water is loaded with minerals and will leave hard watermarks when it evaporates.  Second, where do you put your shampoo, soap, and loofah sponge?  Third, there’s no light inside.  You’d have to face outward to see things at night (we’ll get to that at the end of this post).  Fourth, will the water splash out into the bathroom?  There’s no lip.  If you’re then forced to add a shower curtain, it will further reduce visibility.  Fifth, thanks to one of our readers for pointing it out, you’ll likely get wet when pre-heating the water due to the control handle’s location.

Let’s check out the front of the house now.  This is the Before in 2004 when it sold for $127,000.

before after real estate photos curb appeal Phoenix Arizona home house

It was listed for sale in 2007 for $349,000 (didn’t sell) and here it is again in 2008 (didn’t sell) with lattice and a gravel yard.

The view behind the lattice.  Worth $222,000 more?

before after real estate photos front patio lattice Phoenix Arizona home house

How it looked in January 2010 as a foreclosure home (no surprise); it sold for $56,000.  They removed $293,000 worth of lattice?

before after real estate photos curb appeal Phoenix Arizona home house

And then the new owner remodeled the home and listed it this summer at $195,000.  What do you think of the new modern design?

Here’s another angle so you can appreciate the cut metal facade.

Here’s how the house looked inside in 2008.  Note the beautiful wood floor.  And use the middle wall with the mirror as a reference point.

before after real estate photos flooring interior space Phoenix Arizona home house

By January 2010, the wood floors were ruined.  How did that happen in 2 years?

before after real estate photos flooring interior space Phoenix Arizona home house

And here’s the After photo from summer 2010.  They removed the wood floors and the archway.  If that’s their idea of modern lighting…

This was the kitchen in 2008.  Hardly worth $349,000 but better than summer 2010?

This is the master suite in summer 2010.  They polished the concrete floor.  Please note how you can see the shower from the bedroom.  Remember, with no lighting in the shower, the person will have to face out to see.  Be sure to wave to everyone.
