Miscellaneous Outdated Furniture

September 29th, 2009 · 16 Comments

Today is spring cleaning day, and we’re clearing out some of the photos we’ve had for months and months.  We start today’s collection with three Grandma homes.

1) Gotta love that handmade wall hanging!  Matching bedspread and drapes.

2) Old furniture.

3) Wow, that looks really old.  The house was built in 1952.

God bless Grandmas. These houses looked well cared for and loved.

This grandma is a very good housekeeper!

These “old” sofas look real sleek compared to the bloated monstrosities infesting furniture stores nowadays.

All that “retro” furniture is very much in…well, with the right fabrics and combos that is. Besides, there are some good bones to that furniture compared to a lot of the new stuff these days.

    Just saying.

The houses are indeed clean. My grandfather’s house always looked like he looted the Salvation Army’s dumpster, and then sprinkled everything with an inch of dust and dog hair.

    Photo #3
I’ll take the sofa, club chairs, drapes and dining set.
With a little redecorating it would look up to date and chic.

Granny #2 is ready to babysit. Notice the rocking horse hiding behind the blue chair.

It’s really fun to look back at these old homes and the furnishings — thank you for all the work that goes into providing this website and the great photos that are included!

It still has a special feel to it even so it may be considered dated by some.

I love room #3. Mid Century Modern is so in right now it’s not funny. That stuff could go for so much on craigslist… the couch is woof worthy and the rug too, but that couch with new fabric would be nice.

Granny chic is the next trend…

why should someone be obligated to keep their house “up to date” anyway, if they prefer something else? sure, i think the first two are pretty ugly, but obviously someone out there didn’t, so who am i to judge? i can’t understand people who care so much about how others live.

A., we don’t care about how people live. We care about how their homes look when they put them up for sale. Granted, these homes are probably spotless and well-maintained. But consider today’s buyers. They will probably make comments about the age of the furniture instead of the condition of the house or the features. At the end of the day, the agent asks the buyer, “What did you think of the house on Elm Street?” And the buyer says, “Oh, grandma’s house?”
    Just saying.

It’s all about the emotion the house evokes from the potential buyers. You have less than 1 minute from the time they step in the front door to make a good impression. Looks like these folks really took care of their vintage furniture, but it does distract from the house itself. In the last photo: re-arrange the furniture, get rid of the drapes (bring in some light!) freshen it up and it would show better without replacing everything. All is not lost.

I bought a house built in 71 and it came with that exact same yellow couch, lol. It looks brand new, not the prettiest thing, but it sure is comfortable! It now sits in the Florida room instead of the living room :)
