Leif, the solution is simple. Sit on the side of the toilet, rest your arm on the water tank, and read your newspaper.

My guess is that the toilet originally faced to the right, but they had to turn it 90 degrees when they added the bathtub to the room, otherwise there’d be no room for the user’s legs.
