In the late 1970s, sunken beehive fireplace conversation pits were popular in some new subdivisions.

Neat idea? Waste of space? Safety hazard?

I had to think about it, but I don’t think I’d want to sit on those steps for very long. So probably wouldn’t use it much. Looks to be in Excellent condition tho.

I would be worried about someone falling into it and would add railing. It’s nicely remodeled. Could fill it up with those plastic ball pit balls for the kids.

i actually really like it! don’t like the blah color but it could be spruced up a bit.

Fill it with those ball pit play balls for your kids.
Keep ‘em busy so you can have an adult conversation.

At first glance those pillows looked like the hats of a row of gnomes chatting by the fireplace.

It seems to close in to the fireplace, and too steep to really be comfortable lounging by the fire. I have nothing against conversation pits, but it should be carpeted or have seat cushions, and there should be more room to stretch out by the fire with a good book and a glass of wine. For entertaining, there doesn’t really seem to be quite enough room for occasional tables for food and drink, and for people to sit comfortably together by the fire, isn’t that the whole point of a conversation pit in the first place? To enjoy company by a fireplace, to have a spot without distraction of things like television etc. where the company can enjoy each other with some ambiance. Gotta have a little more room and comfort there….

an updated version of this would be amazing … something more comfy (and safe) … like sitting around a campfire!! I’d spend all my time there with my ipad in my lap.
