1974 Time Warp Cool Spot

November 20th, 2010 · 22 Comments

Have we got a treat for you today.  A groovy basement in New Jersey.  According to the photographer Todd Lappin, this is his neighbor’s basement as it looks today from when it was designed in 1974.

Todd shared the story behind this cool hang-out spot at one of our favorite blogs, BoingBoing.net.  Click here for the post.

WOW! What a neat space. I’ll give away my age, but I haven’t seen this type of space in years. Don’t change a thing! Bright Clean Comfortable and Useful. You are right. What a blast from the past and a good one, too.

The 20th century’s ugliest design era with music to match.
Todd’s neighbor would know. I bet this dude… with the groovy pad… still serves Boones’s Farm Apple Wine along with a helping of Captain & Tennille’s Muskrat Love…on a record player. Why would I know? I think I dated this guy.

“The 20th century’s ugliest design era with music to match.”

So true. I’m reminded of a “Get A Life” episode in which a 1970s Gus says “Man, I hate this decade”.

No matter how well done, how well preserved, it still looks cheap and trashy.

So, that’s where the key parties took place…

    Love the groovy wall paper.

The hills of shag carpet reminds me of those funky carpet scratching houses for cats.

    A “conversation pit”!

..and yes, this was THE ugliest decade of all. Remember how ugly the interior of the Brady house was on TV?
I hated the mid-late 70’s as well. The disco music was awful and tacky. “Swinging” was apparently a “thing”. Just awful, loose, unattractive yuck for design and culture.

I would consider living in Jersey if that was my pad. Talk about well preserved.

Far out! In 74, that would have been my dream basement to hang out with my girlfriends and burn strawberry incense! :) That room is “bad”!

  • 18 Lachlan // Aug 12, 2011 at 7:25 am

Haha well I dunno about incense but I’d probably be burning something else… A green, leafy plant comes to mind…

    It’s so ugly, it’s cool… lol.
Thank-you for sharing all of the retro decor you find in houses, they have inspired me to build Sims 3 houses from the 1950’s, 1960’s, 1970’s, and 1980’s…. they all look so deliciously ugly! :D

I agree with those who stated the 70s were the worst in design. I find everything from the 70s creeps me out. Around here, that was also the decade that gave us aluminum wiring, the worst fire hazard in home building.
