I liked the kitchen better before. I don’t care for the new counters. How could you tell if they were clean?

The house is ok. Really just a typical rehab. But I have a question. Why did they paint the HVAC units Home Depot Orange?

I’ve always wondered about the neighborhoods these houses are in. Was it the neighborhood eyesore or are most of the houses surrounding it just as bad or similar?

If I had to generalize, I’d say it was pretty much the norm. The good thing about the real estate market crash is that investors with money are able to buy these homes cheaply and remodel them. Now someone without extra cash can buy a model-like home; this boosts the sales price in the neighborhood and improves the curb appeal.

Reason I asked is because I wonder why someone would pay good price to live in the one good house in a generally run-down neighborhood. On HGTV real estate shows (which I know aren’t always accurate) they sometimes have homeowners who overdid their remodeling and ended up with a house worth much more than the houses surrounding it. This is usually depicted as a mark against them because most people who can afford to pay that price would want to live in a neighborhood of comparable houses.

I don’t think they deliberately painted the HVAC vents orange, I think they just left the rusted vents in their original state. Personally I liked the original windows better, but other than that it looks great.

Buyers nowadays gravitate toward the remodeled homes when given the chance. They would rather pay $20k more to have all the work done. $20,000 more means $100 extra in monthly mortgage payment or $1200/year. $20,000/$1200 = 16+ years. Most buyers don’t have the $20k cash for remodeling.

Is the hole really gone in the bathroom wall or did they just hang a poppy picture over it?

Melykin - we clean our counters on a regular basis - like daily (gasp) - that’s how we know they are clean.

I have to chime in as a first timer: That kitchen was better w/ original cabinets and pink tile before it was Home-Don’t-Know’ed. I love my retro pink/blue bathroom tiles and original kitchen cabinets from the ’50s. Not every home needs a makeover straight out of a Lowe’s flier - there’s a market for mid-century homes that have maintained some of their original charm. I could KISS the original owners of this house for keeping the Sputnik ceiling fixture in my dining room!

They blocked off half the window in the family room. Now it looks like a basement room with the high window.

Do the roll up the yard and take it away when the house closes?

It never ceases to amaze me how people will pick out some random color for an exterior paint job and totally ignore what color the roofing is.
