Poor Planning

From a 1962 Phoenix home.  The fireplace might not be that old, but it’s sure holding up well.  But…who’s idea was it to keep it so close to the ground?  You’d have to drop to your knees to add firewood.

Who’s idea was it to add the stone hearth that blocks the pathway to the kitchen?  How many toes and feet have hit the stone edge?  How many guests have tripped?

The red X marks the spot where you stop hopping after stubbing your toe and where the blood starts flowing.

OMG!! A little common sense and some fore thought might have helped here. Now someone gets to tear out this mess and that nasty carpet around it. This fireplace is ugly and dangerous.

    Besides being dangerous, it’s ug-ly.

Not only is this thing completely impractial and stupidly designed (why is that vertical stone wall just “floating” against nothing (should be against another wall), but the whole mess sticking out into the doorway/walkway is beyond ridiculous. Just as a bonus, there’s that ever-present hideously ugly exposed painted brick in the room behind to add to the “class” factor… SHEESH!!!

Not only does this piece of crap stick out like a sore thumb, it’s totally in the wrong spot. As a matter of fact, there are no spots to put this, except in the dumpster.

I suppose that, back in the day, some genius decided that locating the fireplace centrally would disperse the heat throughout the entire floor of the house. During the energy crisis of the 1970’s, a lot of people did dumb stuff like this without thinking it through (DIY solar hot water systems is another example). They probably realized later that having it so close to the door created a draft/burn hazard so they came up with this lame solution to the problem (did they borrow landscape rocks from their front yard)?

Joe, that makes perfect sense. This house should come with a free sledgehammer.
