Roman Tubs

January 14th, 2013 · 10 Comments

Roman tubs (sunken bathtubs with straight walls) were very popular in the Phoenix area in the 1960s and up to 1979.  Here’s a Roman tub in a 1961 Phoenix home.

Should’ve left them in Rome, I would bet one or more of these homes have a conversation pit too.

These are just scary. How does a person clean them? Laying flat out on the floor?

The last tub terrifies me. Looking at it makes my stomach turn.. is it just me??

They look horribly uncomfortable. And it would be hard to keep all that grout clean.

I am going to be the dissenting reader here, and actually opine that these bathrooms look just fine to me, if not current fashion. They all seem to be clean and in repair, unlike too many that are on this site. As to using them, I would pick a Roman tub over some of the other vintage styles I have experienced. The most typical bathrooms back in my New Orleans neighborhood had Victorian claw-foot type tubs. They were usually very “retro” pretty but I challenge anybody with any mobility issues, whether from health or drunkenness, to manage those tub’s high walls on a bad day.

The first and last one looks like you may as well lay on the floor and take a bath. Also, the last tub, what if it the middle of the night and you have to go to the toilet? Lights are off and you miss step into the tub, ouch.

    hangs head in shame.

I like them. Outdated but well maintained and kinda cool looking. Nicer than modern day “garden tubs”.
