Entertainment centers, also known as media niches, were popular in the Phoenix area.  Until TVs got wider and not so deep.  The extra storage spaces all but guaranteed they would be filled up.

This unique set-up allows for a television to be placed in front of the niches.

It looks like they cut holes into the drywall to create the niches.

    It’s the type of thing that future architectural historians/archaeologists might wonder about.

    Why even build it into the wall immediately adjacent to the front door? I can just see the door repeatedly banging into what’s behind it. Were the remaining walls unavailable?
