Natural Shower

June 12th, 2017 · 4 Comments

The sellers thought this was a cool idea.

Buyers will think this is…? [Note: The sun is nearly straight overhead at noon on June 21st in Phoenix. That window above the shower will get full sun and heat up that bathroom like a sauna.]

Scandinavian & Baltic Homes

June 11th, 2017 · 4 Comments

I returned recently from a trip to Scandinavia and the Baltics, visiting Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, & Lithuania. I was on the lookout for ugly houses and found a few. Enjoy.

Oslo, Norway fixer-upper. Saw this gem while walking from the harbor to the Viking Ship Museum. The first step to home ownership in Norway is a doozie!

Porvoo, Finland is the 2nd oldest city in Finland (going back to the 1400s). It is a really cute and charming city. 90% of the homes are painted in bright colors and well-maintained. Here are two that need some attention. The first one was built into the hillside. The paint color is a dreadful, blah color. Porvoo’s old church is right up the hill from this house.

170611porvoofinland1

This Porvoo house would look really nice with a fresh coat of paint.

170611porvoofinland2

I saw these next three homes on my walk to the Kumu Art Museum in Tallinn, Estonia. The first home could use a coat of fresh paint.

170611tallinnestonia1

Lots of potential with this Tallinn home.

170611tallinnestonia4

This Tallinn home has a modern design but the yellow and brown color combination saps the energy.

170611tallinnestonia2

170611tallinnestonia3

This is the skinniest home in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Indoor Swimming Pool

June 10th, 2017 · 3 Comments

One of our readers commented on yesterday’s dirty swimming pool post and said he’d like an indoor pool if he bought a house in Phoenix. Well, Felix, your wish has been granted! Here’s a home with an indoor pool! You weren’t specific enough about the size and condition and quality and installation.

170610a

The sellers should have cleared off the counter and sink in the kitchen before selling.

170610b

And cleared off the stove.

170610c

And cleared off the floor. Good grief.

170610d

This room could use some attention too. Perhaps by the person standing on the left with the Nike sneakers.

170610e

Hey, lazy bones, get up and help the lady clear out everything on the patio.

170609a

Jump right in!

170609b

Hurry before all the water evaporates!

170609c

Close your eyes and imagine the cool water.

No Smoking

June 8th, 2017 · 3 Comments

Let’s take a tour of this Phoenix home. Lots to see.

170608a

Lots of dust. Why are the curtains stained?

170608b

We step back from the dining room into the family room. After noticing the ceiling damage, remember the red vacuum handle, the blue folded rug, the aluminum pan (right side middle), and the plastic chairs. They will help orient you as we move about the house.

170608c

We step back again and shift to the left. Lots of dust. That stereo and yellow telephone are old.

170608d

Then we pivot to the left and see ceiling damage.

170608e

Crack in the corner of the room.

170608f

We step back again. There’s the wall crack. And now we see the aluminum pan.

170608g

And when we look down, there’s the folded rug.

170608h

Aluminum pan again plus ceiling damage.

170608i

Now let’s visit the kitchen.

170608j

Original cabinets. House built in the 1950s, likely.

170608k

Help wanted!

170608l

Old flooring.

170608m

Here’s a bedroom.

170608n

We turn to the right.

170608p

And to the right again.

170608q

Another bedroom.

170608r

And now a visit to the living room. With more ceiling damage.

170608s

We look to the right.

170608t

And to the right again, showing the stained wall.

170608u

We finish with two photos of major ceiling damage.

170608v

Total rehab needed.

Psychedelic Kitchen

June 7th, 2017 · 4 Comments

Groovy kitchen from a very imaginative seller.

170607a

Bonus points for creativity.

170607b

Pink dolphins. Who knew?

170607c

The likelihood is that the new owner will tear down the kitchen and artwork plus the archway and outdated Saltillo tile floors.

170607d

When I bought my house nearly 22 years ago, there were interesting drawings inside my kitchen cabinets. A beautiful smiling sun still remains behind my microwave. I have stenciled pigs in my pantry. And this is what is under my kitchen sink. (the hole on the right is abandoned galvanized piping in my 1960 home; replumbed with copper)

No Bath Today

June 6th, 2017 · 2 Comments

Did they throw the bathtub out with the baby water?

170606a

It’s more convenient to leave the toilet tank lid off so you can manually fix the misaligned flapper.

170606b

Hold on. The seller’s on his way to the hardware store to pick up duct tape to cover the missing tiles.

Hat Collections

June 5th, 2017 · 2 Comments

Hat collections are back. Hadn’t seen them for awhile.

170605a

All the hats were hung on the wall with care…

170605b

…in hopes a home stager would soon be there.

170605c

Enclosed patio with no permanent heating or cooling. Too hot to wear a hat in the summer there.

170605d

Amateur collector. Only five?

Tan Your Hide In Mabelvale

June 4th, 2017 · 3 Comments

One of our readers, thank you, sent photos of a foreclosed home in Mabelvale, Arkansas, located near Little Rock and only one mile away from Bass Pro Shop on I-30. We did a little sleuthing and found photos when it was up for sale before the bank took it back.

They have a tanning bed in their bedroom! Along with a Sturgis (South Dakota) Black Hills Rally flag.

170604mabelvalear1

Many items on display in another bedroom including Valentine’s Day balloons.

170604mabelvalear2

Booze and more on display around the fireplace.

170604mabelvalear3

If we step back and shift to the left, we see the rest of the room.

170604mabelvalear4

The only overhead light in the kitchen needs a cover.

170604mabelvalear5

You have two options leaving the front porch: stairs or slide.

170604mabelvalear6

You can shoot hoops while jumping on the trampoline. And there are two giant TVs on the porch. The riding mower does not convey with the house.

170604mabelvalear7

These are the current photos sent by our reader. No more trampoline or TVs in front. Bummer.

170604mabelvalear8

The slide and the rider mower are gone too.

170604mabelvalear9

The front side of the house.
