I love this site! This is inspirational and hilarious and frightening all at once. Thank you for creating this site, it made my day.

I just discovered your site on Apartment Therapy and OMG – I can’t get enough of it! Hilarious! You are one witty agent! Thanks for the daily laughs!

You state, “Secondly, to demonstrate how to prepare your home to sell….” but I don’t see any advice on how to do this other than hire a home stager and professional photographer. I understand about getting the clutter out. But apparently you hate rugs, color, paneling, pets, black leather couches, southwest themes, Disney themes, floral themes and personal items. What is left? Builder Beige? How about some real advice rather than just picking at everything?

I love your website. I look at it everyday to see what is new. I think you do a great job. I read the comment above but I think most of the photos don’t need explanation, it’s pretty obvious what is wrong. It’s not that those things can’t be welcome in a room, ie. Disney or floral themes, but some people just over do it wayyyyy too much.

Love this site. It always offers solace from otherwise mundane workdays.

Jon Mills, lighten up. See the site for what it is.

I have seen worse. I showed 20 or 25 repo’s to a buyer in the 85017 ZIP Code last year and many were far worse than some of these. At least the agent who posted these photos did not refer to the “rec’ room” in a nice home as the “wreck room.”

I’m tempted to say “what a load of crap!” just for the sake of irony, but I’ll refrain

  • 9 Ida Kern // May 16, 2010 at 4:47 pm

This is the funniest site I have seen in a while. I can’t believe some of the conditions people live in. Even if you are poor, you can clean up the dog poop! The gaudy decor photos ares almost as horrifying.

I’ve been house hunting in Maryland and I swear there are worse houses here! My animals live better than some of these people.

    Keep up the great work.

  • 10 PJ // Jul 19, 2010 at 8:20 am

Thanks for the daily postings! Your humor is fantastic and laugh out loud funny!

It’s amazing to see some of the crazy decor people do or the nasty living conditions in many of the homes.

I have seen many of the homes in Sun City that are like stepping into a time-machine back to the 60’s and 70’s!

    Terrific site! 🙂

You make me laugh every time I come here. Thanks for posting these photos. They should be viewed by everyone selling a house as a what-not-to-do education.

  • 12 Angela // Sep 4, 2010 at 9:47 am

Wow! I just found your site through a fellow stager and I’m thrilled! Now when I think I have the worst possible staging job to work on, all I have to do is visit your site and see that there ARE worse homes out there! Thanks for making me feel better already

We LOVE your great photo collection of ugly houses! We kneel and worship thee, all-mighty wondrous God of ugly house pictures! Hail the king!

  • 14 Kelley // Mar 13, 2011 at 3:52 pm

I thought you might like to see this staging before-and-after. The “before” photos have a lot of classic mistakes I’ve learned about from this blog: sponge paint, clutter, collections, dining rooms used as offices, etc.

I just wanted to say thank you for the great site. Thanks! 🙂

    Hi there,
We love your website and are making a show in the UK called Britian’s Ugliest Room. Do you have a mailout or blog that we could add a message on about people taking part in our show. Do you think also that maybe we could include some of the photos in our show. Sorry so many questions and not sure if this will make it to you.
    Best wishes,
    Nicks Bullard

I love your website! It’s a real trip down memory lane and is now bookmarked. Keep it going:)

  • 19 Joey Goat // Sep 5, 2011 at 4:43 am

I KNOW everyone hates those John F Long cabinets, but I am in desparate need of kitchen cabinets, if anyone would like to donate them to me. I will paint them white, and they would add just that bit of zesty tackyness to my 1959 home. I am being completely serious. Thanks.

  • 20 madhaus at burbed // Feb 20, 2012 at 6:43 pm

Thanks for an enjoyable site. I’m glad to see you’re getting photos from beyond just Phoenix.

We have some bad listing photos too, but try to cover all the excesses of selling used houses in Northern California. That includes not only bad photos, but also bad or unreadable listing copy, ridiculous pricing, terrible location (freeway, railroad tracks, power substation, or the ever popular Superfund Site) or just serious WTF finds. Remember, anyone can find a crappy house. But how many of you can find a crappy million dollar house? We find them all the time!

I welcome UHP fans to have a look around our site, and if you know of other websites like UHP, please let us know so we can include them in our “Listing Photo Fail” link category.

I have some photos that I want to submit but I’m worried about the “By submitting photos you agree to express consent to publish and release liability from the owner” requirement. Surely this would come under Fair Use, in particular Parody or Satire?

  • 22 Ted // Aug 28, 2012 at 10:55 am

How is taking photos you don’t own from the MLS public domain? Doesn’t the broker/agent own all these photos?

  • 23 Leif // Aug 28, 2012 at 2:29 pm

Ted, does that mean trulia, zillow, and can’t display photos?

  • 24 Marc @ Mega Quick Sale // Aug 29, 2012 at 4:59 am

    Hi there,

Very funny website. I just finished a similar project on cluttered houses.

I collected some images of cluttered rooms which I found had some visual interest see

  • 25 Ted // Aug 31, 2012 at 9:54 am

Photos from trulia, zillow, and are there by a broker’s permission via ListHub syndication.

I thought you might enjoy …

I don’t often comment, but I browse your site almost every day for updates. This is a perfect idea for tumblr – you’d get TONS of attention since, apparently, people love looking at squalor.

  • 29 Lisa Comfort in Albuquerque, NM // Dec 27, 2014 at 8:55 am

Leif, I love your site! You are like the Dilbert of the real estate world.
Keep cracking us up, please, we need it!!!:)

  • 30 Ann // Feb 4, 2015 at 11:59 am

Hey a friend of mine just remodel their bathroom…They posted the pic up on City-Data forum …What can I say? Not my cup of tea…..UGH!

  • 31 Brigitte // Mar 23, 2015 at 1:12 pm

I love this site and check in every so often. I am currently doing a complete remodel of my 1990 or 91 golden oak-filled Louisiana home. This site brings a hearty laugh when I get frustrated or stressed by the remodel. Can’t wait to send some pix.

Around here, we overdosed on two styles throughout the mid-80s thru mid-90s:

    1. Poufy Southern: Too much pink with hunter green, lots of overdone valances, tons of club stripes and florals. Drapery drapery drapery. (Think Olympia Dukakis’ character’s home in Steel Magnolias.)

    2. (my house) Updated Country, featuring mauve, powder blue, and cream everywhere. Like the Full House house.

Thank you so much for this site and the extensive cross-cataloging. It is awesome.

  • 32 Kate // Jun 11, 2015 at 9:15 am

I love this site. But I am stumped why you do not have a subtopic on paneling. Seriously, who thought it was a good idea to take cardboard, make it look like wood, and stick it on the walls???? I am house hunting and you would not BELIEVE how much paneling is out there!

  • 33 Leif // Jun 11, 2015 at 10:26 am

Kate, scroll down on the Categories (left column) and you’ll see Wood Paneling! Enjoy.

  • 34 Kathie // Jan 4, 2016 at 1:29 pm

I love your website! Did I ever tell you about when my next door neighbor listed his house, and his realtor took 31 photos in all – but not ONE of the front of the house! (Most were of personal property, furniture, detergent on top of the washer that was not conveying with the home, etc.)

  • 35 Shawn Lewis // Mar 12, 2016 at 1:05 pm

I am a set designer and always searching for photos that show how real people live. Your site is ABSOLUTELY fantastic and has helped me so much with research. I am also a teacher (MFA directing students) and they now use your site as well. I also love the unassuming tone you take. Let me know if you are ever in NYC, I’d like to buy you dinner!

  • 36 Colette // May 12, 2016 at 1:03 pm

Hi – I discovered this website whilst Googling for 80’s/90’s decorating trends. I think it is fab. Problem is, I think so many of these pics are SO bad, they are good – in really kitsch sort-of way. Some of these houses are STUCK in time! I’ve started a new blog ( about vintage decor and I hope you don’t mind but I would LOVE to feature some of your photos. Please say if there would be an issue. Of course, your blog would get credit every time. This is a super idea for a site xxx

I know this is some sort of Performance Art Piece, but still… You need to zoom in on some of the details in the room. Some of this stuff I remember growing up with!
