People and their clever ideas. Too bad they don’t stop to consider reality. For example, this Glendale, Arizona owner added nice looking barn doors to his kitchen. So far, so good.

But…the doors are for the refrigerator and the pantry. So EVERY TIME you want something from the refrigerator, you have to open the barn door plus the frig’s door. How many days would it take for that to get old? You’d end up leaving the barn door open all the time.

The Best Worst What Were They Thinking Photo: FLY STRIP
Our big winner of the Worst “What Were They Thinking?” Real Estate Photo contest truly is a head scratcher. Why would the seller of this home use a close-up photo of a fly strip to promote the sale of his home? What message does it send to buyers?

Thanks, everyone, for voting!

The caption for this Sun City West home’s photo is, seriously, “Cody welcomes you.” Why is a ventriloquist dummy used to promote this home? To cover up the ugly chair? The weird things sellers do sometimes. Well, at least it isn’t a Chucky doll!! “Buy this house or I’ll kill you.”

This game room is the seller’s way to reinventing the song “99 Bottles of Beer On the Wall.” Here we have 99 ball caps on the ceiling. Over 250 hats?

The seller offered to sell all of the hats and fixtures to the buyer for $1,800. How about the buyer paying the seller $20 to remove it all?

More evidence that the previous owners lived in the house under the horrible conditions of extensive roof leaks, water leaks, and bad remodeling jobs: this is a craft project that took a long time to create. It’s in the corner of an enclosed carport. This is what happens when you lose your marbles; you glue the marbles to the wall!

Another view of this delightful art project.

He/she painted the ceiling.

Oh, look, more ceiling paint!

Sponge paint in the living room.

Rag rolled paint in a bedroom. Lovely, huh?

Three Phoenix homes with ridiculously stupid do-it-yourself air conditioning ductwork. No professional heating & cooling company would have done this.
House #1: I previewed a house and then saw the neighbor’s house with their cockamamie exposed air conditioning vents. Oh, it’s only 109 degrees in Phoenix. That shouldn’t affect the cold air blowing through these metal vents, right?

House #2: I’m still shaking my head at how dumb this is. This is a foreclosure home going for $47,500. The previous owners paid $203,000 for it in August 2006 and then proceeded to make their mark. They enclosed the patio and made it into three little rooms. Well, these West-facing rooms get hot and there is no attic space. So they added air conditioning ductwork along the ceiling. Here’s the first room.

The second room gets the dumb award of the month. They cut holes in the ductwork to cool the room! Unbelievable. The ductwork ended at the beginning of the third room.

House #3: I shake my head a lot when I visit homes like this. Someone decided to remove the flat ceiling to create a vaulted ceiling look throughout the house. But they left the air conditioning ductwork as before. Now it’s all you notice in the house. This is the dining room. Guests get to look at this while they eat.

The view from the living room. The kitchen’s on the other side of the latticework. They paid $186,500 for the house in August 2007. The bank’s selling it now for $54,900.

This Phoenix, Arizona home doubles as a new amusement park called “Remember the Alamo.” Here’s the front entrance with the ticket counter. Buy this home and pay off your mortgage by charging admission.

In all seriousness, the photo caption reads, “Fountain & Pass-Thru Window.” Yep, they built a water fountain into the wall. That’s worth the price of admission right there!

They continued the insane madness to the rest of the back yard.

How many hours were wasted spent on this stupid project?

In the kitchen, they tiled up the wall.

Ugliest faux paint ever? Let’s check the mental health of the “artist” who finger-painted this home. Hopefully that is paint on the walls and not feces. Can you imagine the first thing buyers say when they walk in this house?

They used window shutters as closet doors.

What was going on in the mind of the person who created this mess? Crazy bathroom remodel. 1980s brass light. No mirror above the sink?

When air conditioning ducts are placed on top of a hot roof and are made of heat-conducting metal and are located in hot Phoenix, Arizona, the air inside the ducts will get very hot. Then try blowing cold air conditioning through them; it’s a losing battle.
