Really Stupid Air Conditioning Ductwork

August 10th, 2009 · 2 Comments

Three Phoenix homes with ridiculously stupid do-it-yourself air conditioning ductwork.  No professional heating & cooling company would have done this.

House #1:  I previewed a house and then saw the neighbor’s house with their cockamamie exposed air conditioning vents.  Oh, it’s only 109 degrees in Phoenix.  That shouldn’t affect the cold air blowing through these metal vents, right?

House #2:  I’m still shaking my head at how dumb this is.  This is a foreclosure home going for $47,500.  The previous owners paid $203,000 for it in August 2006 and then proceeded to make their mark.  They enclosed the patio and made it into three little rooms.  Well, these West-facing rooms get hot and there is no attic space.  So they added air conditioning ductwork along the ceiling.  Here’s the first room.

The second room gets the dumb award of the month.  They cut holes in the ductwork to cool the room!  Unbelievable.  The ductwork ended at the beginning of the third room.

House #3:  I shake my head a lot when I visit homes like this.  Someone decided to remove the flat ceiling to create a vaulted ceiling look throughout the house.  But they left the air conditioning ductwork as before.  Now it’s all you notice in the house.  This is the dining room.  Guests get to look at this while they eat.

The view from the living room.  The kitchen’s on the other side of the latticework.  They paid $186,500 for the house in August 2007.  The bank’s selling it now for $54,900.

Tacky! Looks as if you could remove the flat ceiling in the kitchen, but as for that duct work not sure how fix it! Nor would I have the energy!

the added duct work looks like my sister’s cement bomb shelter that they are converting into bedrooms for their growing family. But their home was built in the early 1900’s and doesn’t look this bad!!
