Rake the Shag Carpet

November 14th, 2010 · 9 Comments

For those of us old timers, we remember when shag carpet was very popular.  You had to rake the carpet, seriously, to keep it looking fresh.  Here’s some delightfully green shag carpet in a Springfield, Ohio attic.  And it’s freshly raked!  The ceiling looks terrible.  Is that mold?

Lavender and bile green. YUCK!!! The ceiling looks like it was “antiqued” using a dry brush with darker paint. As dated as the shag carpet. That window can NOT be safe.

My grandparents had orange shag carpet and, yeah, it had to be raked to look “nice”.

I think the ceiling just has a textured finish and the “mold” is just shadows. At least I hope.

I remember raking a shag carpet, too.
We got fed up with it fast, ripped it up and exposed beautiful hardwood floors.

Kind of a creepy room. I imagine that they put guests there to make them leave sooner rather than later.

Very ‘Flowers in the Attic’. I think the black stuff might be soot?

Mmm yeah-stucco ceiling and shag. Never heard of raking carpet tho. Did people use garden rakes? Odd.

Jat, there are special small plastic rakes made for carpet. I’ve seen them recently in home supplies catalogs.
The old joke was - that shag is so long you can mow it.

Forget the carpet… how low is that ceiling? It doesn’t look very useful other than for storage.

It looks like a popcorn ceiling or maybe a broomed ceiling with shadows on the popcorn causing it to look discolored. I can’t see someone who would take the time to rake their carpeting allowing the ceiling to get moldy, I would expect that of someone who wouldn’t take care of their carpet.
