Scandinavian & Baltic Homes

June 11th, 2017 · 4 Comments

I returned recently from a trip to Scandinavia and the Baltics, visiting Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, & Lithuania. I was on the lookout for ugly houses and found a few. Enjoy.

Oslo, Norway fixer-upper. Saw this gem while walking from the harbor to the Viking Ship Museum. The first step to home ownership in Norway is a doozie!

Porvoo, Finland is the 2nd oldest city in Finland (going back to the 1400s). It is a really cute and charming city. 90% of the homes are painted in bright colors and well-maintained. Here are two that need some attention. The first one was built into the hillside. The paint color is a dreadful, blah color. Porvoo’s old church is right up the hill from this house.

This Porvoo house would look really nice with a fresh coat of paint.

I saw these next three homes on my walk to the Kumu Art Museum in Tallinn, Estonia. The first home could use a coat of fresh paint.

Lots of potential with this Tallinn home.

This Tallinn home has a modern design but the yellow and brown color combination saps the energy.

This is the skinniest home in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Nice to see some different architecture. I would also love to see the inside of that skinny house!

Thank you for posting these, Leif, I love seeing homes from all over. I live in a suburb of Houston, so I see a lot of architecture like you feature on this site. (I just got back from a week in New England and realized how much I prefer the new styles here!) I am always impressed by how much Europeans can do with the space that they have.

I love the times that I have spent in Scandinavia. I once wandered about Stockholm till the morning, it was so enchanting.

The little ones make my heart go pitty-pat!

You should see the tiny houses built in Japan. The are really clever in making multi-use spaces and storage. Without having to fold everything up into the walls! You can find a lot of them at RocketNews24 dot com.
