Just About Useless Air Conditioning

April 23rd, 2009 · 3 Comments

When air conditioning ducts are placed on top of a hot roof and are made of heat-conducting metal and are located in hot Phoenix, Arizona, the air inside the ducts will get very hot.  Then try blowing cold air conditioning through them; it’s a losing battle.

That type of ductwork is common in industrial applications. The insulation is on the inside where it won’t get wet when it rains.

It’s not as inefficient as you may think, and in fact is probably more efficient than ductwork in a superheated attic.

Its still ugly on top of a house.

It’s cool that industrial ductwork is insulated.

No self-respecting air conditioning professional would allow installation of ductwork like this. These are the actions of amateurs. It is highly doubtful that the ductwork is insulated.

What really happened is this: Remember the ‘Phoenix Lights’ seen in the east valley a few years ago? One of the alien life forms flying in the formation died suddenly, falling from the sky onto the roof of this house. Seriously.
