PlayStation players are hoping for more PS Plus day-one games after getting a number of them in a single year. Although it launched on the now-defunct PS Now, Shadow Warrior 3 was a day-one launch, followed by acclaimed indie Stray (PS Plus Premium and Extra), and the upcoming Divine Knockout, which is included in December 2024’s PS Plus Essential lineup.
PS Plus day-one games unlikely to include AAA games
Sony’s stance on PS Plus day-one launches is pretty clear. The company has said on numerous occasions that games like Stray are an anomaly and launching AAA first-party games on a subscription service is unsustainable. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan has said that Sony cannot afford to make a loss like Microsoft does with Game Pass, and not being able to recoup investment would ultimately lower the quality of first-party games.
That said, Sony has had quite a lot of success with launching indies on PS Plus, and fans hope that’ll continue. Fall Guys, Rocket League, and Stray have all been success stories for the company as well as developers. It remains to be seen how well Divine Knockout fares.
