Microsoft has increased the Xbox Series S price in India again, despite Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer having criticized Sony for its PS5 price increase back in September 2024. This is the second time the price for the Xbox Series S has been raised in India, with both consoles getting an increase just a few months ago as we reported in November 2024. That was after Spencer said that “it was important to maintain prices” during the holiday period.
Xbox once again follows PlayStation in price increases
Market analyst Rishi Alwani has reported on Twitter that the Xbox Series S will be getting yet another price hike in India from 37,990 rupees to 39,990 Indian rupees. Converting that to USD, that’s about an increase from about $460 to $484.
While this price increase could be limited to India, this could be Microsoft testing the Xbox Series console price hike in foreign markets before doing the same in the United States and Europe later this year.
Spencer previously criticized Sony for its PS5 price hike in select markets, stating that “in a time when our customers are more economically challenged and uncertain than ever, we don’t think it’s the right move for us at this point to be raising prices on our consoles.”
Microsoft also revealed in December 2024 that its first-party games would cost $70 for Xbox Series X|S in 2024, following Sony’s similar price hike for its first-party games in 2020.
