Ukraine Developer Frogwares’ Project Palianytsia is a Clear Middle Finger to Russia

by Ali Mahmud

Ukraine developer Frogwares has announced they have a new project in development, although it is not the project they intended to make right now. Project Palianytsia is a game that will mix horror and mystery and is in its very early stages. However, Frogwares wants it to act as a symbol that the studio can still continue despite the current situation, as well as “a clear middle finger” to Russia.

What we know about Project Palianytsia

Project Palianytsia is a “mix of eldritch horror coupled with Victorian-era mystery” that is meant to appeal to fans of the developer’s previous games, The Sinking City and the Sherlock Holmes franchise. The game will be “more streamlined” than their most recent titles, but it is a game the team felt sure they could finish “under these extreme circumstances”. The game will be revealed properly this summer. If you’re wondering why the game was announced in this way, Frogwares’ Communications Manager, Sergey Oganesyan, had an answer for that:

We are revealing the game now in this way to simply show people we are pushing on and also as a clear middle finger to those who thought they could just roll into our country hoping to disrupt and ruin our lives.

For now, you can read their full statement to players below, complete with an Anarchy-style symbol hidden in the text, as well as see two of the concept images the team released:

Palianytsia is a type of bread considered to be a national dish in Ukraine. It has also taken on a second meaning during the recent conflict, as the word is difficult to pronounce correctly for Russian individuals. As such, it is used as a test to identify Russians trying to pass themselves as Ukraine citizens.

In other news, more rumors about a Red Dead Redemption Remake are doing the rounds, but don’t fall for it this time. Elsewhere, Saber Interactive is working with Aspyr Media on the Star Wars: KOTOR PS5 remake.
